The 2020 season was quite an adventure for the Cardinals Baseball Club. With the Covid-19 pandemic shutting down many things within New Hampshire and, for a bit, preventing interstate travel for teams and players, the GSBL had decided to combine 18+ and 28+ divisions into one 18+ division for the 2020 season.
However, the Cardinals ball club had to rethink their 2020 strategy, because many of their players were from Massachusetts. So, basically they rebuilt their roster on the fly and were able to play out a shortened-season. Despite the "hodge-podge" of a team, the Cardinals had a successful 2020 season, reaching the playoffs and advancing to Final Four.
For 2021 the GSBL, elected to separate the division back to the original 18+ and 28+ alignment. This left the Cardinals in a curious position. They had alot of young guys not eligible for 28+ and/or guys who elected not to play in 2020. The decision was made almost immediately to start a second team and play in both divisions.
On Janaury 12, 2021, the GSBL welcomed in a second Cardinals team, which would be playing in the 18+ division. From there the Merrimack Valley Cardinals were born. It was decided that even though the Merrimack Valley Cardinals were the "new" team by name, they would retain all statistics and records from 2020 Covid-19 short-season, because the league was combined into one 18+ division during that time. Therefore, the New Hampshire Cardinals would be the "new" team in the 28+ division.
While Aaron Wovkanech would remain manager, he would manage the 28+ Cardinals with Erik Rozzi and Chris Lavallee as assistants. However, Chris LAvallee was named head coach of the 18+ Cardinals with Cameron Conway and Matt Soucy as his assistants. Aaron Wovkanech would be Chief Financial Officer for Cardinals Baseball Club.
It was also detrmined that the Cardinals would find a new home field to play in 2021.
