Team Spotlight: New Hampshire Cardinals

Managed by Aaron “Wolfcock” Wovkanech

Managed by Aaron Wovkanech, the New Hampshire Cardinals are entering their second season in the New Hampshire Baseball League with renewed confidence and a sharpened focus. While the record in their inaugural year didn’t fully reflect their competitiveness, the Cardinals proved they belonged—dropping four games by just two runs or fewer and making a playoff run that included eliminating the Red Sox before falling to the Braves.

Pitching & Defense

The Cardinals’ pitching staff remains solid and experienced. Veteran hurlers Aaron Chauvette and Danny Oehlbeck return to anchor the rotation, joined by a fully committed Eddie Bush. The staff gains more finesse with the addition of crafty left-hander Dave Vaillette, who joins after the Hooksett Red Sox folded. Aaron Wovkanech, David Leeds, and Paul Dionne round out a deep and balanced pitching group.

Behind the plate, All-Star Brian "Remy" Remillard returns to lead the catching corps. He’ll be supported by rookie Mike Steffany and the versatile David Leeds.

Infield Outlook

The corners have seen some change following the departures of Brad Backowies, Clark Killinger, and Mark Cook. To bolster those positions, the Cardinals brought in Brian Antonucci (formerly of the Black Sox/Red Sox) and John Rigal (Mariners). Duane Vossbrink and Dave Vaillette add additional coverage at first base.

Up the middle, the team is anchored by second baseman and All-Star Erik Rozzi, along with Dionne and Wovkanech—who returns to his natural position at second after holding down first base in 2022. Shortstop duties will be shared by Chauvette and Bush when they’re not on the mound.

Outfield Depth

The outfield features strong returning talent, including All-Star Carlos Veras, the steady Matt McMahon, Scott Harding, Dan Gordon, and David Leeds. Adding to the mix is Derek Levine, a former IronPig making a comeback after a six-year layoff.

Looking Ahead

With increased depth across the roster and a solid foundation of returning talent, the Cardinals have their sights set on a stronger regular season and a deeper playoff push in 2023. The pieces are in place for a playoff-caliber campaign.
