In a back-and-forth slugfest, the Merrimack Valley Redbirds pulled off a thrilling 13-12 comeback victory over the Manchester Phillies on Saturday, powered by a clutch performance from Danyer Fabian.
Fabian delivered at the plate, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs. His sixth-inning double on an 0-2 pitch drove in two runs, followed by a two-run single later in the frame that capped a massive 11-run inning and flipped the game on its head.
The Phillies had built an early 8-1 lead, scoring in each of the first three innings. Dylan Bissonnette and Steve Case were central to the attack, combining for eight hits and six RBIs. Bissonnette finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBIs, while Case also went 4-for-5 and scored twice.
But the Redbirds came roaring back in the bottom of the sixth, stringing together six hits and taking advantage of multiple walks to storm ahead, 12-8.
The Phillies responded in the top of the seventh, tying the game at 12-12 with four runs on three hits and a Redbirds error. However, in the bottom of the seventh, Cam Conway came through with a go-ahead RBI single that put the Redbirds back on top for good.
Zach Rioux earned the win out of the bullpen, tossing three innings of relief while allowing four unearned runs and striking out six. He also fired an immaculate eighth inning, striking out the side on just nine pitches. Nick Rioux secured the save with a clean ninth.
Chris Gauss chipped in with two hits for the Redbirds, who showed patience at the plate with seven walks—two each from Conway and Rioux.
Victor Jorge started for the Phillies and gave up one run over three strong innings. Reliever Brian Shea took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) over 1.2 innings, striking out four and walking three.
The Phillies racked up 14 hits in the game, with Tom Ryan and Elijah Perez adding multi-hit efforts. The Phillies also swiped four bases.
The Redbirds remained undefeated with the win and will look to keep rolling as they host the Granite State Grizzlies later today.
